Bio
Marco Bertozzi (Bologna, 1963) is a filmmaker, film historian and curator of film art exhibitions.
After graduating in architecture, he studied cinema at DAMS in Bologna, at Ipotesi Cinema (with Ermanno Olmi and Mario Brenta) and at Paris 8 University. He continued his post-doctoral studies at the Roma 3 University, where he developed a series of research on the relationship between cinema and the city and on Italian documentaries. Among his books: "La veduta Lumière. The urban imagination in the cinema of the origins", 2001; "The eye and the stone. Cinema, an urban culture", 2003; "History of Italian Documentary. Images and cultures of the other cinema", 2008; "Recycled Cinema. Lost images, rediscovered visions", 2012; "Documentary as art. Reuse, performance, autobiography in the experience of contemporary cinema", 2018, "Fellini's Italy. Images, landscapes, forms of life", 2021.
He is part of that group of authors who, in recent years, has contributed to the rebirth of Italian documentaries, combining historical-theoretical interest with his activity as a filmmaker. Among his films: "Appunti romani" (2004, presented at the Locarno Film Festival and winner, among others, of the Big Screen Exhibition, in China), "Il senso degli altri" (2007, winner of the "Sole e luna International Doc Festival" in Palermo), "Predappio in luce" (2008, in competition at the Rome Film Festival and winner of the International Art Film Festival in Asolo), "Refugees in Cinecittà" (2012, with which he brought to light the events of the refugee camp in the Roman studios), "Cinema grattacielo2 (2017, awarded, among others, at the Biografilm in Bologna, at the MAXXI in Rome and at the Move Cine Arch International Festival).
He has been active in the promotion of Italian documentaries with institutions such as the Audiovisual Archive of the Workers' and Democratic Movement, the Italian Association of Documentary Makers, the Solinas Documentary Award for Cinema and as the presenter of "Corto Reale. The years of the Italian documentary", a 27-episode program broadcast on RAI Storia.
He has taught Cinema at the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia, at the Roma 3 University, at the Paris 8 Vincennes-Saint Denis University, at the University of Quebec in Montreal, at the Gian Maria Volontè School of Cinema in Rome, at the International Conservatory of Audiovisual Sciences (CISA) in Locarno, and, currently, he is full professor of Cinema at the IUAV University of Venice. He has published essays on aesthetics and film history in magazines such as Cinema&Cinema, Fotogenia, Bianco & Nero, La valle dell'Eden, Cinémas, Film Studies, Arts and Artifacts in Movie-Tecnology, Aesthetics, Communication, Quaderni del CSCI, Fata Morgana, Immagine, Studies in Documentary Film, and held conferences in various European and North American universities. He has carried out an intense activity of promotion of Italian cinema by curating exhibitions and exhibitions with Villa Medici – French Academy in Rome, the Cinémathèque québécoise in Montreal, the International Film Festival of Amiens, the San Diego Italian Film Festival, the Festival Viva il Cinema! Journées du Cinéma Italien di Tour, the Cineteca di Rimini, the M9 Museum – Multimedia Museum of the Twentieth Century.
He has written various essays on the work of Federico Fellini, edited "Bibliofellini" (the international bibliography on the director, in 3 volumes), was a member of the Board of Directors of the Federico Fellini Foundation and co-curated, with Studio Azzurro and others, the exhibition "Fellini 100 – Immortal Genius" and the "Fellini Museum" in Rimini, Opened in 2021. In 2022 he deserved the Minister of Culture Award for art criticism, awarded to him by the Accademia dei Lincei in the presence of the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella. In 2023 he directed, with Alina Marazzi, the first edition of UnArchive Found Footage Fest, the festival dedicated to the creative reuse of archival images.
